If you are staying at a hotel in Lausanne, you are eligible for a free daily pass for public transportation within Lausanne. You must ask for the pass at the Hotel Desk. Moreover, you also can use public transport free of charge in Lausanne (the Metro and buses) on the day of your arrival to get to your hotel; you will need to show your hotel reservation in case the authorities ask for tickets.

Please get a pass, even if you are at a hotel near the conference center. You will need the pass to go to the Olympic Museum on Thursday evening for the ASPLOS banquet.

Transportation

By plane/train

Genève-Cointrin (GVA) is the nearest airport (40 – 60 minutes). Zürich Airport (ZRH) is located 2.5 hours by train. The Swiss railroad (SBB CFF FFS – German / French / Italian) leaves from both airports and will take you quickly to Lausanne. There are 2-4 trains per hour from each airport. The SBB Mobile App displays train schedules and enables quick online ticket purchases.

Taxis and Uber are very expensive in Switzerland and public transportation is frequent and reliable (though not inexpensive), so it is preferable.

Other possible airports include Paris and Lyon in France and Milan in Italy. From these airports, you can take a train to Lausanne and get access to your hotel either on foot (Alpha-Palmiers Hotel) or by public transportation (Swisstech Hotel and Starling Hotel).

To the Alpha-Palmiers Hotel

From Lausanne Gare, you can walk directly to the hotel.

To the Swisstech Hotel

  • Take Metro M2 (directly across the street from the Lausanne Gare) toward Croisettes and get off at the next station (Lausanne-Flon)
  • Change to Metro M1 at Lausanne-Flon. (Lausanne Flon is the terminus for M1; there is only one direction to go.)
  • Get off the M1 at the EPFL stop. The Hotel is right on the Metro platform

To the Starling Hotel

  • Take Metro M2 (directly across the street from the Lausanne Gare) toward Croisettes and get off at the next station (Lausanne-Flon)
  • Change to Metro M1 at Lausanne-Flon. (Lausanne Flon is the terminus for M1; there is only one direction to go.)
  • Get off the M1 at the EPFL stop. Walk to the Starling Hotel through the EPFL campus as indicated.

Lunch around the Swiss Tech Conference Center (STCC)

To keep costs reasonable, the workshops on Monday and Tuesday do not include lunch. Fortunately, there are several restaurants immediately next to the STCC and many cafeterias on the EPFL campus within a 5-10 min walk. All offer a good meal at a reasonable price. Among the on-campus cafeterias, I recommend L’Ornithorynque, Le Corbusier, and Le Puur. All the restaurants accept payment in cash or credit cards.

Thinking of Skiing?

It should be possible to ski before or after ASPLOS, depending on the snow. Here’s a good site with a lot of information about the many possible resorts https://www.myswitzerland.com/en-ch/destinations/holiday-destinations/winter-ski-resort/.
